He figured he only had a moment or two to act before a remote bomber detonated his device. So Mason jumped behind a three-foot berm and crouched in a fetal position before the shockwave hit him. "It was too quick for me to think, 'Oh god, I'm going to die," said Mason. "It was just scared right away."
Five months later, his team came across another device on a highway. Mason died trying to disarm the device. And there are many such examples.
